Who is a Teaching Elder?

Within the class of elder are the two orders of teaching elders and ruling elders. The elders jointly have the government and spiritual oversight of the Church, including teaching. Only those elders who are specially gifted, called and trained by God to preach may serve as teaching elders.
When a man is called to labor as a teaching elder, it belongs to his order, in addition to those functions he shares with all other elders, to feed the flock by reading, expounding and preaching the Word of God and to administer the Sacraments.
Please see BCO Ch.7 & 8.

RULING ELDERS

Who is a Ruling Elder?

The Ruling Elder is charged with the responsibility of exercising government and spiritual oversight over the flock of Christ.
They must be men of sufficient knowledge, discernment, and holiness of life that reflects the Gospel of Jesus Christ (1 Tim. 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-16).
For a thorough description of the necessary qualifications for the eldership in the PCA please see BCO Ch. 24.

Who is an Elder Emeritus?

An Elder Emeritus is a "retired" Ruling Elder who has decided to transition out of the role of full time shepherding.

Elder Emeritus' are still vital to the church officers as they have accumulated many years of shepherding experience.

They are deeply respected men within the church for their many years of loving service.
